About the Orphanage

Why Cambodia?

Currently in Cambodia, most of the population lives in poverty.  Many families do not have the financial means to feed their children or sent them to school (currently Cambodia is 60% illiterate).  Many children become beggars, criminals, or end up stealing or fighting for food.  Even worse, are the children who have lost their parents due to landmines, crime or AIDS.  Most of these children are forced to look for food in garbage dumps or starve.  They have no opportunity for education and end up sleeping out on the streets.  Thus, there are few countries in the world with a greater need to have its underprivileged children supported.

New facilities:

Due to this unfortunate reality, the NCCLA was created by Neth Lay, the owner of the Veiyo Tonle Restaurant.  The NCCLA provides poor and orphaned children with a safe place to live, food, clothes, medicine, and a proper education.  Since its inception in November 2004, the orphanage has made great progress in providing a good life for these previously starving kids.  In 2005 the children started attending public school, studying English, and learning traditional Khmer dance.  In 2006 the children were moved from a rented one room space to a newly purchased and renovated two floor location with two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a play area, and a class room.  Also, four computers were recently installed so that the kids can learn computer technology and software.  Below is the computer area where the kids are about to use typing without looking software.

What keeps NCCLA afloat?

Because NCCLA is relatively new, it does not receive any regular, outside financial support.  The majority of funding comes from the non-profit Veiyo Tonle Restaurant.  Unfortunately, during the low season the restaurant's income plummets dramatically leaving NCCLA with a lack of funds to support the children.  Therefore, what NCCLA needs most is regular, monthly financial contributions from NGO's, corporations, and people like you.  The monthly operational expenses are currently about $60 per child per month which includes food, shelter, medicine, clothing, and education (click on "Finances" below to see the details).  Please click "How to Help" to see how you can make a difference and help these kids.
